Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Is A Group Of Inherited Blood Disorders That Affect Haemoglobin (the Molecule In Red Blood Cells That Carries Oxygen Throughout The Body)

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect haemoglobin (the molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body). People with SCD have abnormal haemoglobin known as haemoglobin S, which causes red blood cells to become sickle-shaped (like a crescent moon). There is no universal cure yet, but some treatments help manage the disease.

Sickle Cell is genetic and a blood test can confirm the presence of the sickle cell gene. It can be prevented — it starts with knowing your genotype. Before love, before marriage, get tested! Together, we can reduce the number of children born with Sickle Cell.

Sickle Cell is more than just a condition — it’s a daily battle for millions. Many warriors fight silent battles with sickle cell — enduring pain, hospital visits, and exhaustion. But their courage is unmatched.

People living with Sickle Cell are not defined by their condition. They are dreamers, doers, and survivors.

Let’s stop the stigma and start the conversation. Awareness is power and awareness begins with understanding.

Let’s stand with them. Let’s educate, advocate, and support.
